The previous lowest high for an entire August was 87 in 1958. This was the 7th August in 66 years of records that the month's high didn't reach 90. MONTHLY SUMMARY At long last, August brought some welcome, soaking rains. This was only the 2nd month with above normal precipitation in 2013. The other month was June, and barely. The nearly 6-inch deficit was cut by about 40%, as a number of soaking, though never excessive, rains fell. There were two days over an inch and another close to an inch, and 6 days with more than a half-inch. Some of the rain events had thunder, but several were fairly steady rains or showers with no thunder. Precipitation was well distributed through the month. The favored mountain locations to the west were extremely wet, with double-digit rainfall totals in parts of Preston (WV), Garrett (MD), Fayette (PA), Somerset (PA) and other counties in nearby higher elevations. Another refreshing change in the weather pattern was cooler than normal temperatures. This was one of the cooler, but not the coolest, Augusts. It was the first month since March with below average temperatures. There was a lack of any excessive heat, and a few cool spells, especially in the middle of the month when highs struggled to reach 70 at times and lows were around 50 here and in the 40s in the nearby mountains. The median high was in the low 80s, with the mean skewed down by a few cool readings on days with or after rain events. The overall wet, cool pattern greened lawns that had become parched during the long, warm and dry stretch in late July and early August. Though it was wet, many of the rain-free days were exceptional for late summer, with sunny to partly cloudy skies, light breezes and low humidities.
